THE RED ONION

The red onion of Tropea IGP is the queen par excellence of onions, the sweetest and most delicate, versatile in all uses, both for cooking and for eating raw. The onion's incredible sweetness makes it a true all-rounder in local dishes: it is eaten in sandwiches, pasta dishes, burgers and salads and is generously sliced on pizza. You will often see it served as an appetiser: onions are well suited to grilling, roasting and especially salt cooking, but are sometimes eaten raw with a drizzle of oil. Frittata is another delicious local delicacy, where the onions are lightly sweated and then cooked in an omelette. Tropea onions also make an excellent jam: locals combine the onions with sweet peppers and cook them for hours, creating a delicious paste to be spread on crostini or eaten with cold meats and cheeses.

THE CAVES OF ZUNGRI

The Rocky Settlement, also called `` Grotte`` covers an area of about 3,000 square meters, its origin is still under study. Two of the most credited hypotheses: a colony founded by eastern populations, or a production/deposit outpost of the nearby Kastron of Mesiano.

Santa Maria of The Island Church

This sanctuary lies on a sandstone cliff, and is considered a privileged place of devotion and pilgrimage, given its importance for all Tropeans, not only for the cult of the Virgin of the Island.
